Your Position: Home - Hardware - What Am I Missing, Bench Vise Prices
I found that Wilton places a real premium on the "bullet" style vise. And I don't really think it is worth anywhere near that much. You can get a better, stronger vise for less if you shop other brands. The Fireball Tool that someone above mentioned is, perhaps one such. I saw a video where they tested a bunch of heavy duty vises to destruction and succeeded with all but one, theirs of course.I could not afford anything like those prices so when I needed a new bench vise I did buy a Wilton, but not the bullet style. I bought a new, but plain, 6", Wilton bench vise for well under $200. That was several years ago and that number included shipping. It only opens to 6", but that has been enough for me for at least 4 years now. IIRC, it is/was Wilton's least expensive, 6" bench vise.I made those soft jaws, they didn't come with the vise. One thing I really like about it is the 360 degree swivel base so I can always have the best angle. My old bench vise did not go even 180 degrees and that was a bad limitation, IMHO.I think this is the same model for $200, with free delivery. Wilton has a number of other models that are less expensive than the "bullet" style and they all hold things on the corner of your bench. You can say all you want about the cost of this or that, but I think Wilton just charges what they think the traffic will bear when it comes to the "bullet" model. Mine does 90% of what it will for 10% of the cost. But, as they say, YMMV.
