The good news: There are plenty of wonderful affordable strollers available for parents, says Marilyn Bull, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Sure, they dont have as many bells and whistles as their pricier counterparts, but cheap strollers are just as safe as any other on the market.
Still, strollers do tend to be one of the higher-cost items to buy for babies. If the timing is right, it may help to get your stroller on a shopping holiday like Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday, where tons of retailers offer big discounts on baby gear. You may also discover lower stroller price tags in the sale sections of popular retailer websites like Target or Amazon, which frequently have special deals, and hence, more affordable options.
But even if you arent able to take advantage of a sale, you have plenty of options. Budget-friendly strollers are available in every type from umbrella strollers to doubles to jogging versions and you dont have to sacrifice quality or even some high-end features when opting for a lower price tag.
Per the guidance of leading experts as well as What to Expect staffers and community members, we evaluated and selected the best inexpensive strollers based on the following criteria:
Safety features: All strollers sold in the United States must adhere to the safety standards set forth by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Per guidance from the CPSC and AAP, all strollers on this list have:
Longevity: Regardless of how much you spend on a stroller, you want it to be durable and long-lasting. After all, if you opt for a cheap model that falls apart quickly or has a very low weight limit, youll eventually spend more money to replace it. With that in mind, all of the inexpensive strollers featured have positive reviews for their durability, and weight limits of at least 45 pounds. Also worth considering: If you have more than one child or are planning to expand your family in the future, you may want to consider a stroller that can switch from a one-seater to two or more. Weve included a few inexpensive convertible options below.
High-end features: Inexpensive strollers can sometimes be a little basic, so we prioritized models that have the nice-to-have features of more expensive brands. For example, cup holders, one-handed fold, a roomy storage basket, car seat compatibility, an optional newborn bassinet and swivel front wheels, to name a few.
Cost: Strollers can cost anywhere from $50 to upwards of $1,000, but all of the models featured on this list ring in under $400, and most fall far below that figure. The strollers we selected that fall in the $300 to $400 range offer additional value, such as being travel systems (meaning they also include a car seat and base) or a double stroller.
