Ceramic Impeller Shafts
Hey Im wondering if anyone could tell me how to cut down a ceramic impeller shaft? I had bought 2 new stream type power heads and i put the 1st 1 in my tank , plugged it in and its great. The 2nd one wasn't so lucky , i thought it would be a good idea to take off the shroud and see what's inside, so that's where the 1st impeller shaft got broken and the 2nd one was close behind it. So i called the manufacture and i ordered 5 more, well the 1's in the power head were 3" long and the replacements are 3.5" long . OK now everyone has been brought up to speed so 2 speak .... any help is greatly appreciated in advance i just want to get this power head working......
Ceramic generally has a higher Young's modulus than Stainless steel so will cope better with stresses and strains before actually fracturing, and is fairly cheap and easy to replace, the only friction that will occur is between the impeller, shaft and the magnet at the end with water, so I doubt heat is one of the reasons, as the shaft is held in place using a magnetic field.
Not all impellers have ceramic shafts anyway, some of the older Koralia models have Stainless Steel shafts.
